Nicki Minaj Answers Lawsuit Claiming She Stole “Starships” Song

In September of 2013, Chicago EDM artist Clive Tanaka filed a lawsuit against Nicki Minaj claiming the rapper’s hit song “Starships” illegally used parts of his song “Neu Chicago.” Radar Online reports that Nicki (born Onika Maraj) is requesting that Tanaka’s suit be dismissed.

Court documents filed for Nicki Minaj’s behalf state that she did not infringe on the performer’s copyright because the “Starships” composition and recordings are “original works of authorship.” The docs go on to say that Minaj never met Tanaka or heard the song “Neu Chicago.”

Nicki points out that she received the “demo” of “Starships” from producer Red One and then added her own lyrics. Red One (Nadir Khayat) and songwriters Carl Falk, Wayne Hector, and Rami Yacoub are also named as defendants in Tanaka’s suit. Tanaka believes that Falk, Hector, and Yacoub heard “Neu Chicago” in their home nation of Sweden.

The song apparently received significant lots airplay as part of television ads in the country. In her response, Minaj acknowledges that the original demo for “Starships” was created in Sweden by Falk, Hector, and Yacoub, and then sent to Red One in 2011.

Minaj also argues that Tanaka released “Neu Chicago” in 2010 but did not register the song until three years later. This was after she released “Starships” in 2012. The Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded creator is also requesting that the case be moved from Illinois to California where she lives.

Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj Feud Update

Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj have had some time to process the rage that was so evident during last year’s season of American Idol, but they haven’t.

The two have instead decided to update the feud with a new album release date war. Mariah is mad that Nicki dropped a song and video from her record on the very same day as her 4-year in the making album opus.

Truth is, Minaj is just in a hurry to get some money coming in, now that she has a $30 million law suit hanging over her. If Mariah Carey was close to getting over her feud with hip-hop artist Nicki Minaj, she definitely isn’t now. Carey had put four years of her life into her new album The Art of Letting Go, only to have its unveiling over shadowed by Minaj’s release of a new song from The Pink Print.

In a recent radio interview Mariah let it be known that she is not up for discussing Nicki Minaj, when asked about their prior relationship, “Who? I don’t even remember what that was. “I was a complete professional…That was a moment of my life that I’m just going to press delete.” Though the real truth behind Minaj rushing her album to stores may having more to do with the multi-million dollar lawsuit filed against her by her former hair stylist. Terrence Davidson is alleging that Nicki not only had other people duplicate his designs, she’s directly making money off them by selling the hair pieces on her website.

Davidson’s lawyer Christopher Chestnut told CNN that Minaj is trading on a brand that his client helped build, but for which he has never been compensated: “Nicki Minaj is reaping great success and financial bounty reward for Terrence’s creative expertise, and he is entitled to participate. “We applaud the fact that she’s making millions, but she’s also got to pay bounty to those whose creative designs she’s making millions off of. On its face, you might think what this guy is suing over is wigs, but we really have to consider this in context.

Hair is a multibillion dollar industry: “But moreover, these are not your grandma’s wigs. These are eclectic. They are decadent, and they are creative. “This is about a brand that Terrence has built.”
