Controversial 'American Idol' judge Nicki Minaj said via Twitter that she was leaving the show

Nicki Minaj, was born Onika Tanya Maraj on December 8, 1982, in Saint James, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago but was raised in Queens, New York since she was 5 years old.  She is of mixed Indian and Afro-Trinidadian ancestry and has three siblings.

Nicki’s father was a severe drug addict with a long history of violence. At one point, he set fire to the family’s home in a failed attempt to kill Minaj’s mother. Her father’s drug addiction and oppression was the main factor Nicki strived for a better life.

At the age of 12, Nikki demonstrated her natural ability for performance by attending La Guardia High School of Music and Art for acting, and creating her first rap song. After her acting career failed to take off, Minaj worked at Red Lobster in the Bronx at the age of 19 as a waitress. Minaj was fired from Red Lobster because of her discourteousness to customers. She stated she had been fired from “at least fifteen jobs” for similar antics.

To break into the music scene, Nicki Minaj started landing roles as a backup singer for local NYC rappers while writing her own songs. She was ultimately discovered by Dirty Money CEO Fendi through her MySpace page and signed on the spot.

In April 2007, Nicki gained national attention for a series of mix tapes she release. Working with rapper Lil Wayne, including, Playtime is Over. Her in-your-face attitude and swagger led to her over-night stardom and a large screaming fan base. She later dropped the mix tape Sucka Free (2008), which won her the Underground Music Award for Female Artist of the Year.

Nicki released her first single, “Massive Attack,” followed by the release of Pink Friday (2010), which rose to the number one spot on the Billboard 200 charts and was certified Platinum in November of that year. In June 2012, Nicki won Best Hip-Hop Female at the BET Awards and dedicated the award to her mentor Lil Wayne. Two years later, Nicki released her second album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded (2012), which sold 1,000,000 copies and became one of 2012’s best-selling albums.

Most recently, Nicki appeared on the judge’s panel on season 12 of the reality-competition show American Idol in August.  While recently filming in Charlotte, North Carolina, a leaked video of Nicki and Mariah yelling and threatening each other during an audition, hit the web. At one point, Nicki is heard yelling, “I told them I’m not f**kin’ putting up with her f**kin’ highness over there,” and later threatened to knock Mariah out. However, many continue to speculate that it was all fake and solely meant to boost up the hype for the upcoming season.

2010 – 2010

After going on tour together, Nicki and Drake were rumored to be hooking up but the two never made a big deal out of it. In Drake’s song, ‘Miss Me,’ Drake raps: “I love Nicki Minaj/ I told her I’d admit it/ I hope one day we get married just to say we f—ing did it/ And girl, I’m f—ing serious/ I’m with it if you with it/ ‘Cause your verses turn me on and your pants are mighty fitted.”

2011 – Present

Nicki and boyfriend of 12 years, Safaree Smauel, broke up after a bitter argument. Nicki had keep her relationship with Safaree a secret because she thought it would negatively affect her career which put an added strain on her relationship with Samuels.

Opening up about her past Nicki confirmed that she had an abortion when she was a teenager, and that she was involved with and an old man at the time.

Nicki is currently involved with Meek Mill, a fellow rapper who is rumor to have been part of the reason Nicki and Safaree broke up.
